| Supplies-caps, preforms, labels, etc.
Norland Blow Molding systems utilize PET preforms that are blown into the desired shape and size of the preferred bottle. Preforms look quite similar to laboratory test tubes except for the fact that they have preformed threads at the top of the tube. These threads are preformed(hence the preform name) for the cap to screw on to the blown bottle. This ensures a secure and tight seal after the bottle is filled and the cap is tightened.
The preforms are very compact, unlike bottles that are normally shipped. A 40' trailer can hold up to approximately 650,000 / 24 gram preforms, while a 40' trailer can hold only about 40,000 blown bottles.
Preform costs vary by supplier and are sold by actual gram weight. The larger the preform / bottle, the more material is required. Typically, a one-litre bottle preform sells for approximately $0.07 - $0.09 each. The labor involved to produce a bottle will add approximately $0.01 per bottle depending upon local labor costs and benefits (based on $6.00 per hour labor rate).A wide variety of preforms can be provided to create the exact bottle style and color that your business demands. Preforms range in size from as light as 18 grams to as heavy as 130 grams.
Small Bottle Caps
A wide variety of caps are available from a number of reputable suppliers. Several sizes of caps can be used on any of Norland’s equipment. In particular 28 mm, 30 mm, and 38 mm are standard sized caps that are used. For important versatility, Norland’s LC3000 Labeler / Capper can automatically cap and tighten both flat and sports style caps.
For product diversity, high profile 5 and 8 liter bottles can be produced on the Norland BM8L Blow Molder. In addition to these sizes, and for maximum versatility, the BM8L can produce any sized bottle up to 8 liters.
To make customer handling of larger sized P.E.T. bottles easier, high impact bottle handles are available to fit suitably sized preforms.
Perhaps the most important marketing factor for your product is the necessity for high quality, reasonably priced bottle labels. Because of the power of shelf appeal it is critically important to ensure that your label is well designed and well produced. Make sure that you choose a reputable label supplier who is well experienced in printing bottled water labels.
In some cases, shrink seal bands are necessary to protect bottles from product tampering. When this is the case, clear or imprinted bands are placed over the cap of the bottled and heat-sealed to produce a hygienic seal around the cap. A wide variety of suppliers exist for this consumable item.
Shrink Wrap Material
Because the packages design and logo are visible through clear film, Shrink-wrap greatly improves the marketability of your product at the retail level. Your shrink wrapped product, with its marketing message easily visible, will enjoy preferred prominence on the shelves of retailers, wholesalers, wholesale price clubs and warehouse clubs. Consumers can more easily handle shrink-wrapped packages rather than individual multi-pack bottles. Shrink-wrapped packages are inherently tamper-evident and protected from dust and abrasions.
For large 3 to 5 (12-19 Litre) gallon home and office delivery, polycarbonate bottles are hard to beat. Made from durable and long lasting polycarbonate plastic, these bottles can be re-used up to 100 times before their useful life is reached. Bottles are available with or without handles and can be ordered from a variety of suppliers.
3 to 5 gallon polycarbonate bottles require either screw-on or
push- on type caps. Make sure that the bottles you order are designed for these specifications. In addition, caps can be ordered in either standard format or safety seal format.
